This beloved historic 1886 limestone fire station, built for horse-drawn wagons, lacked space for modern-day firefighting. The solution: an addition and remodel with dual-purpose spaces zoned for quick response times and fire fighter health. Zones include “hot” (carcinogen exposure), “warm” (transition), and “cold” zones (living and administration). The project's success hinged on a strong partnership with local firefighters, who provided invaluable input on programming and space planning. The addition houses apparatus bays that double as training space for advanced rescue techniques. The 50-foot stair tower connects the addition to the original station, serving as a central hierarchical point for circulation and training.
The renovation of the historic fire station carefully transformed the building into modern living quarters and administrative spaces while honoring its heritage by exposing and restoring its original timber, steel, and brick elements. To honor the original station, local limestone was used to clad the addition, reinforcing the project’s connection to the community. Large glass overhead doors in the apparatus bays offer daylighting and passive solar heating, while aluminum storefront systems replace the previous overhead doors, providing daylighting while referencing the building's past.
This project successfully balances preservation with functionality, creating a fire station that meets the needs of the community while honoring its heritage. The revitalized station is not only a vital community asset but also a testament to the enduring spirit of the town.
