A Family Foundation’s new headquarters in Kansas City unites several previously separate entities under one roof, creating a cohesive workplace for the foundation’s philanthropic arm, financial management entity, and family asset operations. The 18,000 sq. ft. space is designed to balance independence and collaboration, with each group maintaining its own entrance and dedicated workspace while sharing central amenities.

At the heart of the office is a welcoming reception area that anchors the organization’s activities and fosters a shared sense of identity. The design reflects the foundation’s wide-ranging user groups, from rural grantees and agricultural partners to financial professionals. The space blends commercial workplace sensibilities with warm, familiar elements inspired by agrarian and residential design.

Material choices play a key role in defining the character of each space. White oak appears throughout the project in distinct forms—rustic and knotty on the philanthropic side, dark-stained and refined in the financial offices, and comfortable yet elevated in the shared areas, creating a sense of continuity while celebrating the differences between groups.

The project’s fast-track schedule required close collaboration among the foundation, design team, and contractor. After an extensive search for the right site, the foundation selected a location in Kansas City’s River Market district and moved quickly through design and construction, relocating even before work was fully complete to meet the timeline.

The updated headquarters reflects the foundation’s mission and legacy, providing a welcoming, adaptable, and regionally inspired workplace that supports its philanthropic efforts and positions the organization for the future.
