With over 6,000 students across the district and only one school serving all middle-level learners, Auburn-Washburn USD 437 required a second middle school to alleviate overcrowding. The new school is designed for 750 students and enables the district to move sixth-grade curriculum from elementary to middle school.
The school prioritizes students’ socio-emotional needs while embracing a “learning happens everywhere” ethos to ensure efficient use of space. Engagement with students through surveys and workshops revealed the need for emotional support. The design responds with purpose-built spaces that encourage autonomy, social interaction between classes, and celebration of personal identity.
A central circulation spine—called the “Forest Walk” for its connection to the adjacent forest—consolidates public commons, dining, and the library into a single “learning first” environment. This unique blend of programs reclaims underutilized spaces to form a vibrant, all-day learning community. The approach saved nearly 10,000 sq. ft. without sacrificing functionality, allowing new investments in programming and curriculum.
Biophilic design principles further reinforce student well-being, offering natural light, views, and connections to nature throughout the building.
By integrating social, academic, and environmental considerations, the new middle school provides an adaptable, forward-thinking learning environment that supports the whole student. Thoughtful spatial organization and feedback-informed programming help position the school as a model for future-ready learning.
The building reflects a deep understanding of the district’s evolving needs and the importance of creating a supportive, inclusive space that can adapt with students and serve the community well into the future.
