About the Event
Scheels is a national retail store with 34 locations that incorporates a wide variety of sporting goods, gear, and apparel, headquartered in Fargo, ND.
During this tour, Project Manager/Designer David Sogge and Forensic/Building Tech David Skarphol of R.L. Engebretson Architects will discuss the re-use / re-design of the existing Sears retail store constructed in 1976 and the challenges that came with it. We will touch on some of the design features and the technologies that have been incorporated such as the Sage electrochromic glazing system (that at the time of the tour may not be fully functioning), the aquarium and support space needed, complete replacement of the mechanical system and other design changes required for store operations.
The session will address the challenges of reinforcing existing steel & footings for increased 2nd-floor live loads and additional problems that go along with it. Issues with 2 story retail spaces and the need to connect the levels with an atrium space for natural light and visual connectivity. The importance of strategies to engage and provide more of an experience for the shopper.
