About the Event

Multistudio and Hoke Ley Architects are bringing Park(ing) Day back to downtown Lawrence this fall

after a five-year hiatus! This year's event will be held on September 27th, the final Friday of the month,

with installations placed along the Mass Street corridor.

What is Park(ing)Day?

Park(ing)Day is an annual global event aimed at engaging the public, and reclaiming public

space for the people. Started in 2006 by the San Francisco creative-collective, ReBar,

participants are challenged to explore the full dimensions of urban social ecology, experimental

design, and creative vision in the humble parking spot.

It is “an open-source experiment in reclaiming public space.” Park(ing)Day is a combination of parks

and rec, architecture and design, and social activism.

How does it work?

Park(ing)Day participants conceptualize and then make real their idea on how to take an often

overlooked piece of the public built environment, the humble parking space, and transform it into

a temporary installation that offers more to the public than just a spot for a single car. The public

is then invited (and encouraged!) to interact with the various installations.

The aim of the event is to engage the public through temporary urban intervention.

Installations are temporary and have a leave-no-trace mentality. Recycling and re-use of

materials are strongly encouraged and each installation will have the ability to be installed and

taken down by its group members in a timely fashion that corresponds with the rules and

regulations of local jurisdictions.
